July -11 July 2010 Venue: Silverstone |
Welcome to JFMG’s Event Pages for the 2010 Grand Prix. We hope that they will provide you with all the information you need when applying for frequencies for this year's event. We also hope to provide you with up-to-date information regarding spectrum availability and demand.
Frequency demand for the Grand Prix is extremely high and increases every year. In excess of 650 frequency assignments were used at last year's event and we are expecting a further increase in 2010. The frequencies used range from 140MHz to 15GHz for various equipment including talkback, pit-to-car communication and telemetry.

Spectrum Overview:
When applying for frequencies we would strongly advise customers to apply for those that we manage on a day to day basis. Take a look at the "Your Frequencies" page for full details of what this includes. We will try our best to accommodate all frequency requests within this spectrum, however if we have insufficient channels to satisfy demand we will seek special authorisation to use spectrum owned by another user. This is especially common for the Grand Prix.
Many requests from the Grand Prix teams include frequencies which JFMG do not manage. This means that we have to apply for authorisation from the spectrum owners via Ofcom. This process can make the licensing process more complicated and
more time consuming. We would therefore again advise customers to see if they can operate their equipment on those frequencies we do have direct access to.
L Band
The 1452-1492MHz band has been auctioned by the regulator in
April 2008 so it is not possible that we will be able
licence any frequencies within this range.
UK TV Bands (470-862MHz)
The most popular bands for presenter's microphones and communications is 470MHz to 862MHz. It is currently used for broadcasting, but where a particular channel is not being used for television transmission it can be used by PMSE.
The Silverstone area is particularly congested in these bands. Please
Non PMSE Spectrum
JFMG is able to license frequencies across
specific areas of spectrum from VHF through to SHF for PMSE
use. There are frequencies where additional
authorisation is not required. The different ranges
can be found
here.
If, however, your frequency requirement does not fall in any of the PMSE ranges, then spectrum must be sourced from Ofcom where additional authorisation is required.
Shared & Licence Exempt Frequencies
As the spectrum demand is very high at the
Grand Prix, utilising licence exempt and UK General channels
in the usual way may not be ideal. Therefore it would
be best if users declared any frequency use in these ranges.
Timescales, Fees & Payment
Applications for Major Events are acknowledged and a target date for issuing assignments is advised, usually no later than four weeks before the event. We then design a frequency plan which aims to match your requirements to the limited frequency resources available with the minimum risk of interference. This may mean that it is not possible to assign the exact frequencies requested or even the number of frequencies requested. Late applications are handled on the usual first-come, first-served basis, but, of course, it may not always be possible to meet all the requests. Please note that frequencies will only be allocated upon receipt of full payment.
Our advice for customers wishing to operate at such events is to submit your requests in plenty of time to be included in the initial plan, and ensure that, if possible, your equipment is flexible in terms of frequency and power. In this way, we can ensure that detailed radio frequency planning of the event can take place. Please note that where demand is high, it may not be possible for a customer to be assigned all the frequencies requested.
Other events may attract fewer users but put considerable strain on our spectrum and require careful planning. In order to plan the use of frequencies as effectively as possible, applications may be held until a fuller picture of likely spectrum demand emerges.
